belize in september

Considering Belize as a September vacation destination? Of course! This Central American paradise sparkles this time of year.

September in Belize is considered the low season so visitors will find lower prices on flights and great package deals on accommodations and tours. It also means fewer tourists so there is less time waiting in lines and more time exploring the magnificent Mayan culture, the pristine Belize Barrier Reef, and the numerous waterfalls and caves. Yes, it is the green season here, but residents know that the rains tend to lighten up during September and those that fall often do so overnight. The temperature is around 80 degrees almost every day. It gets no better than that!

Oh, but it does! This beautiful country goes into full party mode in September. Visitors enjoy mingling with the warm, proud Belizean people as they celebrate their independence from British rule in spectacular ways.

Early in the month, the Expo Belize Market Place is held. Located in Belize City, the expo features national arts and crafts, entertainment and exhibits from Belize’s many industries.

Although the merriment lasts all month, the official start to the festivities is September 10. St. George’s Caye Day marks the victory of the native Baymen and slaves over the Spanish soldiers who were making one last attempt to chase them from what was then known as British Honduras. The date became a national holiday in 1898. The colors of the flag are on display everywhere. Traditional Belize music is played by many radio stations.

Pageants and live musical concerts are held all over Belize, as each town schedules their own festivities. There is always something going on!

Belize’s September Carnival is a Creole-themed road march through the decorated streets of Belize City. Participants are dressed in colorful costumes, and floats wind their way around town. While popular tunes flow from the onboard speakers, choreographed dances are performed in the streets. Food vendors showcase traditional dishes for all to enjoy.

British Honduras was renamed Belize in June of 1973. On September 21, 1981, it declared its independence from Great Britain. The nation is in full blown pageantry on this day. Visitors get caught up in the flag waving, fireworks and parties as the people of this splendid nation demonstrate their patriotism.
