More and more people are discovering that one of the best places to celebrate Easter is in the Central American country of Belize. With a festive, English-speaking majority Christian population, Belize explodes with a riot of colorful festivals every year at Easter.
Easter, Belize Style
The multi-cultural communities of Belize celebrate Easter each in their own unique style, with almost everyone given a long four-day holiday to help celebrate the most holy day in Christianity. Following 40 long days of fasting during Lent, the festivities begin with Holy Thursday, when banks and most stores close in honor of the Last Supper, not to re-open again until the following Tuesday.
Belizean families use the Easter holiday to travel to different parts of their country, visiting other family members and attending local celebrations. Good Friday is commemorated with a special meal, Belize style, consisting of fried fish, a coconut fish soup called Sere, and lots of hot cross buns. Religious ceremonies are also held to re-enact the traditional Stations of the Cross, accompanied by plenty of singing.
The next day, Holy Saturday, hosts the annual Cross Country Classic bicycle race, beginning in Belize City and continuing all the way down to San Ignacio Town in Cayo District before coming back around for the exciting finish in Belize City. Meanwhile, Belize families take advantage of the delightful weather to host barbecue cookouts with friends and families, enjoying everything from lobster and fish to beef and chicken.
Easter Sunday starts with religious ceremonies at church, followed by ever-popular Easter egg hunts for the children, as well as plenty of chocolates and sweets for everyone. Easter Monday is famous for hosting the annual Horse Race at Castleton Race Track in Belize District. Other activities that occur locally during the long weekend include tug of war contests, live musical performances, a grease pole competition, fun fairs with bumper cars and merry go-rounds, and even beer drinking and bikini contests. With plenty of delicious foods and drinks on hand, Easter is a week where the entire nation of Belize is participating in celebrations.
The Weather in Belize at Easter
March and April are two of the best months to visit Belize. With warm, clear skies, and almost no rain, temperatures average a very pleasant 83F (28C) during the day, dropping to a delightfully cool 74F (23C) at night. Easter falls during Belize’s dry season, which means visitors won’t have to contend with strong tropical storms or heavy gusts of wind. And, while temperatures are warm, you’ll escape the sometimes overbearing heat of mid-summer.
Yok Ha Island Resort
One of the loveliest spots in all of Belize is the Yok Ha Island Resort. Located just a few miles off the coast of southern Belize, Yok Ha Island is a privately-owned tropical paradise.
