One of the three atolls in the southernmost coast of Belize, the Glover’s Reef Atoll was named after John Glover, a 17th century pirate who used the location as a base for raiding Spanish merchant ships. Today, Glover’s Reef is famous for its crystal-clear waters and rich marine life.
Located 40 miles off-shore from Belize , Glover’s Reef Atoll measures 18 miles long and 6 miles wide. On the eastern edge of the atoll, the reef’s bottom drops sharply from 2,600 feet to 15,000 feet on the western edge of the Caiman Trench. While these drops are amongst the deepest in the world, it also create a protection wall surrounding Glover’s Reef which results to the abundance and diversity of the marine life within the atoll waters. In 1996, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was made part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. Glover’s Reef also has a shallow rainbow-colored lagoon, which houses over 700 coral patches, making the atoll the perfect site for scuba diving, snorkeling and sea kayaking.
