Belize is one of the top places in the world to enjoy an unforgettable family fishing vacation. Whether it’s deep sea fishing beyond the Belize Barrier Reef or fly fishing from the flats and shallows of coastal Belize, the waters in the country are teeming with a variety of game fish.
Some of the top fish species found in Belize include: bonefish, permit fish, tarpon, grouper, snapper, snook, barracuda, jacks (jack crevalle), amberjack, tuna, mahi mahi, both blue and white marlin, sailfish, mackeral, cubera, bonito, pompano, and lionfish.
Bonefish – Can be found in large numbers throughout the year. Fishing season runs from April through October. The most popular spots to land bonefish are from the flats and lagoons of the islands of the Belize Barrier Reef.
Permit – These fish are found in significant numbers throughout the year, although fishing is best when prevailing winds are blowing consistently. Many anglers consider Belize the permit capital of the world.
Tarpon – Larger numbers can be found starting in April and May with the best months to land them being during the summer months of June, July, and August. The best spots to fish tarpon include rivers, creeks, and lagoons on the mainland.
Many anglers come to Belize to complete a Grand Slam by landing all three species listed above.
For other species, generally the best time for fishing from the flats is between May and November. That being said, experienced anglers that rate the best months for fishing a 10 would give the “worst” months an 8 or a 9 score. Simply put, there is great fishing to be found throughout the entire year in Belize.
Species that are illegal to fish in Belize include: parrotfish, sea turtles, mammals, whale sharks, and coral.
You will need a fishing license to fish in Belize even if you’re a tourist. A one-day license costs 20 BZD ($10 USD) and one-week license costs 50 BZD ($25 USD).
